Ashland Highlights Escalol S UV Filter for Broad-spectrum Sun Protection at Sunscreen Symposium

“Ashland Specialty Ingredients, a major producer of UV filters and a leading innovator of water-resistant agents, presented the merits of Escalol™ S UV filter as an important ingredient in highly efficient broad-spectrum sun care products at the Florida Society of Cosmetic Chemists meeting in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

ashlandsunscreenThis single ingredient helps filter out sunburn-causing UV-B, as well as dermis penetrating UV-A radiation, both of which can lead to an increase in the risk of skin cancer.

“Providing sun care product formulators access to the latest sunscreen technologies is essential to the production of effective, and cosmetically elegant sun care formulations that offer optimized protection from the damaging effects of UV radiation,” said Anna A. Gripp, Global Marketing Manager, Sun Care, Ashland Specialty Ingredients. “Escalol S UV filter is popular due to its broad-spectrum effectiveness.”

“Just as importantly, Escalol S UV filter works synergistically with other filters to provide improved sun protection factor (SPF) ratings and enhanced UV-A protection. For these reasons, Escalol S UV filter is often referred to as the ‘keystone’ ingredient for effective broad-spectrum sun care formulations.”

In the United States today, formulators have limited UVA filter options to choose from when creating long-lasting effective protection against UV-A radiation.
Once Escalol S UV filter is approved for use in the U.S. by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), formulators will have expanded ingredient options to use in their broad-spectrum products, giving consumers added protection from the sun’s harmful and skin damaging rays.

Escalol S UV filter, from Ashland, is currently approved in Europe and other parts of the world, for use as a broad-spectrum UV-A and UV-B filter in sunscreen formulations.
In addition to Escalol S UV filter, Ashland offers a comprehensive line of sunscreen technologies that incorporate its broad portfolio of UV filters that, when used together, offer manufacturers, of body and facial care products, a variety of options to choose from to meet the needs of their customers.

“Sunsational Texturity”

Creating the desired texture remains a major challenge in formulating high SPF spray, lotion, and gel sun care products.
Formulators often face tradeoffs between the desired product texture and SPF levels, especially with products in the SPF range of 30 and above, where the slip, glide and overall skin feel of the formula is often compromised in order to achieve these higher levels.

During the FLSCC Sunscreen Symposium, the Ashland Texture Bar hosted a range of prototype formulations, allowing attendees to experience high SPF formulations with cosmetically elegant textures.
Calling the texture-enhanced, sun care products, “Sunsational Texturity,” Ashland demonstrated novel sun-protection formulations for both the body and face, along with after-sun skin care products. With its expertise in specialty ingredients, formulation architecture and texture creation, Ashland offers manufacturers of sun care products both products and technical service to enhance sensory features. Additionally, Ashland provides consumer and product testing that can predict how the product will feel on the skin as a component of overall product performance.”
