« The European Food Safety Authority’s food contact materials panel (Cef) has found the substance 2,4-di-tert-amylphenol safe for use in food contact materials.
The compound is an impurity and hydrolysis product of the antioxidant phosphorous acid, mixed 2,4-bis(1,1-dimethylpropyl)phenyl and 4-(1,1-dimethylpropyl)phenyl triesters. It is used as an antioxidant in polymers for various food contact uses.
According to the panel, 2,4-di-tert-amylphenol is safe if its migration does not exceed 1mg/ Kg of food.
It should also be included in the current 5mg/kg of food restriction for phosphorous acid, mixed 2,4-bis(1,1-dimethylpropyl)phenyl and 4-(1,1-dimethylpropyl)phenyl triesters, the CEF concluded. »
